Melasma is a skin condition that leads to dark, hyper-pigmented areas of the face. Melasma typically develops around the upper areas of the cheeks, lips, nose and forehead.
The condition is typically caused by an over-expsoure to the sun, resulting in increased melanin production.
What are common causes of Melasma?
Melasma is most commonly seen in women and is caused by sun exposure. Living in areas of the world with stronger sun levels increases the chance of developing Melasma. Moreover, women with brown or light brown skin are at a higher risk of developing this condition.
Other common causes include things such as hormonal influences as well as certain medications. Examples of medications include birth control and HRT (hormone replacement therapy.)
Women who are pregnant or premenopausal are typically more likely to develop Melasma.

Melasma usually begins to develop anywhere between one’s mid-20’s and early 30’s.

Treatment options for Melasma include lasers and IPL treatment, topical medications, and chemical peels.
